Some highlights from the report:

-cannabis use is decreasing among police detainees

-use of other drugs similar to other years

-early analysis of 2011 data shows a spike in methamphetamine use

-alcohol use is of increasing concern: detainees (based on drinking habits 3o days prior to custody) are consuming an average of 14 standard drinks on the last occasion before being detained. Those who consumed more than one type of alcohol on the last occasion consumed an average of 24 standard drinks.

-alcohol use is clearly concerning, and may go some way to explaining why detainees are in police watch-houses in the first place.

-Poly drug use: Nearly half of all detainees (45%) reported that substance use (alcohol and other drugs) had contributed to their current offences

Read the full report here: http://www.aic.gov.au/en/publications/current%20series/mr/1-20/17.aspx
